Dissertation & Doctoral Project Formatting & Clearance: Periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.)

After you successfully defend your dissertation or doctoral project, what happens? This is a guide to submitting your dissertation or doctoral project for the formatting check and final copy.

How to Cite Periodicals

Journal article, one author.

Houseknecht, S. K. (1979). Childlessness and marital adjustment. Journal of Marriage
and the Family, 41, 259-265.

When do I include an issue number? Include the issue number in parentheses after the volume number if the periodical begins its page numbering again with page 1 in each issue. (For example, vol. 4, iss. 1 is pp. 1-62 and vol. 4, iss. 2 is pp. 1-57, etc.) If the periodical uses continuous numbering for the entire volume (vol. 4, iss. 1 is pp. 1-62 and vol. 4, iss. 2 is pp. 63-119) then only include the volume number.

Journal article, with DOI assigned, one author.

If a journal includes a DOI, or Digital Object Identifier, it must be included in the reference. When a DOI has not been assigned and the reference is retrieved online, provide the URL or the exact URL if available. If the URL is not available, use the journal home page URL. You do not need to include a retrieval date.

attitudes, adoption research, and practice. Family Relations, 49, 363-370.
doi:10.1111/j.1741-3729.2000.00363.x

Two articles by same author published in same year

When two articles by the same author are published in the same year, arrange them alphabetically by title and add a and b after the year of publication so the articles can be differentiated in text citations. If the titles also happen to be identical, then arrange them chronologically by issue number. For example, (Poe, 2009a, 2009b)
