Organizing Your Research: Zotero

This guide provides an overview for organizing your research using the bibliographic reference tools EndNote and Refworks in addition to a detailed how-to guide on Mendeley and Zotero.

Zotero was developed by a team of librarians at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.  It is a free research tool that is downloaded as an extension of the Firefox browser.  Its latest feature, Zotero Anywhere, includes a standalone component and plug-ins for Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer.  Zotero's cloud service provides easy access to your library through automatic synchronization across multiple computers.

Using Zotero, you can:

  • Use drag and drop technology to import citation metadata by clicking on the Zotero item image in the Firefox (or other browser) location bar.
  • Import website metadata and capture screenshots.
  • Share research with other through Zotero Groups and Zotero People.
  • Use the cite as you write application that imports in-text citations into MS Word, Mac Word, OpenOffice and Google Docs.
  • Create a timeline.
  • Assign shortcut keys
  • Apply tags for organization.
  • Access your research library online and offline.
